Whisper Me a Love Review

Rating: 2.5/5

Synopsis: The debut volume of this yuri manga is about a bubbly high school freshman Himari who falls in love with her senpai Yori who part of a musical band.

My Thoughts: While this is far from my first F/F oriented story, it is the first yuri series, in particular, I’ve read. Sadly, for my beginning yuri, it did not leave much of a lasting impression. One of the main reasons is how hackneyed the buildup is. Most well-written romances, from my experience, will naturally introduce the main leads in a way that allows readers to become acquainted enough with their personalities and life before interacting with their love interest (i.e. Always Human or Warning Label). During this book, however, we’re shown right off the bat that Himari is enamored with Yori because of her beautiful singing (in other words, love at first sight). In all fairness, most romances during youth years start with an infatuation which isn’t intrinsically wrong if it gradually progresses beyond that as the characters better know and understand each other down the line. But throughout most of the book’s duration, we’re stuck seeing Himari’s awkward attempts at flirting which I initially found cute but ultimately tiring as dragged on and a bit rushed. Furthermore, a good chunk of the story is driven by music so without a soundtrack to accompany the experience, it loses some of its charm while the dialogue sounded cringey in many places. That being said, I smiled during a few moments and thought the ending did leave some space for further character development in future volumes so I may stick around.

Final Thoughts: Overall, Whisper Me a Love Song was a so-so debut installment with a handful of sweet and fun moments. However, the cheesy dialogue and meh execution bogged it down so I hope it does improve in the future.
