Lumberjanes: Beware the Kitten Holy Review

lumberjanes vol 1
Rating: 2/5

Synopsis: Lumberjanes centers around the wacky misadventures of five adolescent girls in summer camp as they encounter supernatural and paranormal mishaps.

My Thoughts: From the sounds of it, the story looks like a creative mishmash of the whimsy, rollicking charm of Adventure Time and the mystery aspect of Gravity Falls or at least that was what coaxed into anticipating when I heard all the critical praise and hype for this series. Much to my disappointment, like many popular comics I've read that have been hyped up to eleven, it did not live up to these expectations. Firstly, the art style felt pretty messy and all over the place. The same can be said for the plot which felt like a poorly outlined monster-of-week show. Unlike Gravity Falls or even Adventure Time, there was no proper introduction to the characters and setting to help the audience become acquainted with the general nature of the story's universe without being overwhelmed with too many details. I didn't find the main protagonists here very likable or memorable (which is in part due to their simultaneous introductions) either as they came across as the type of loud and obnoxious personalities you would see in a generic Nicktoon. Likewise, the humor was also very juvenile and Nicktoon-ish. The only thing preventing me from giving this book the dreaded one-star rating was the slightly entertaining and engaging action scenes which were, to put in one Goodreads reviewer, Lola's, words, "fast and entertaining in a strange way".

Final Thoughts: As hard as I tried, I just could not become invested in Lumberjanes Vol. 1, so unless there's an improvement within the next few volumes, I'll take a pass on this series.
